Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised massage technique that is designed to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid in the body. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in maintaining the body's fluid balance and immune functions. The lymphatic system is often referred to as the secondary circulatory system but unlike the circulatory system, which has the heart to pump blood, the lymphatic system relies on muscle movement and manual manipulation to transport lymphatic fluid through the body.
Very light pulsing and sweeping movements are used to help facilitate the removal of the body's waste products, excess water and bacteria by directing them to the lymph nodes to be filtered and disposed of accordingly.
As the lymphatic system lies just below the skin's surface, deep pressure is not required and the sweeping motion helps to move fluid along, reduce pain and support the immune system.
MLD can be beneficial to improve circulation and cell regeneration, soothe sensory nerve endings, aid relaxation and overall wellbeing, improve the muscular system due to the removal of waste products, soften and nourish the skin, increase joint mobility, as well as, encouraging deeper and calmer breathing. It can also help to improve sleep quality, ease headaches and sinus congestion, reduce stress and anxiety, help with sprains and strains, aid digestion, benefit oedema and lymphoedema and can be greatly beneficial post operatively to support tissue congestion and minimise scarring.
If you’re just feeling a little sluggish or have fluid retention that just won’t go away, this treatment could help move things along and stimulate your body back into action.
